Demetrius Andrade is warning Canelo Alvarez to avoid his former conqueror, David Benavidez, after losing to him by sixth-round stoppage in 2023. Andrade thinks Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) is too big and throws too many combinations for Canelo to beat.
It’s understandable why Demetrius tries to make Benavides sound invincible because it lessens the impact of his defeat against him. In that fight, he suffered a blow to his ego, suffering his first career loss. So he’s trying to protect his ego by making Benavidez sound like he’s some extraordinary talent when in reality he’s not.
Benavides next opponent
We saw that in his fight against the 37-year-old Oleksandr Gvozdik June 15. Gvozdik recently came out of a four-year retirement and outworked Benavidez, putting all kinds of bumps on his face.
Canelo has not mentioned that he wants to fight the ‘Mexican monster’ Benavidez, and the two fighters now compete in different weight classes. Benavidez, 28, fights in the welterweight division and will challenge the regular WBA champion at 175 lb David Morrell in 33 days on February 1 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
If Benavidez loses that fight by knockout, he may return to the 168-lb division if he can still make weight. It would be useless for him to stay at 175 if Morel (11-0, 9 KOs) destroys him. Morel is just as big as Benavides, but faster, hits harder, is younger and has better technical skills.
There’s a good chance Morel will win that fight and permanently take care of Canelo’s problem, not that he needs help. Andrade, 36, may be impressed with Benavidez’s offensive skills, but he’s no knockout punch. He couldn’t even stop Caleb Plant.
The only reason he stopped Andrade was his size and youth advantage. He was 26 years old when he beat Demetrius last year on November 25th.
Don’t do that!
“I don’t think Canelo is beating David (Benavidez). I don’t blame him for not fighting David. Canelo, stay away from David. Don’t do that,” said Demetrius Andrade Fight Hub TV. “I’m taller and longer than Canelo.” I don’t know if Canelo (can beat Benavidez). It’s a big boy.
“You have to have the right skill set, movement, IQ, sharpness to beat David, unless David is fighting the next biggest man at 175 it will be a different story. But at 168, you have to be like that to beat him.
“Canelo is smaller than me and I was able to push David for a few rounds and do whatever I had to do.” But that weight and his length, and he knows how to hit the crowd, it’s going to be a tough task for Canelo.
“David is not someone who will give you up either.” “Canelo doesn’t beat him,” Andrade said of his belief that Alvarez can’t beat Benavidez.
Canelo would have fought Benavidez by now, but he was talking so much trash and looking like he was in trouble. The way Benavidez seemed fixated on Alvarez is terrifying, almost like a stalker. For any popular fighter to sound as obsessed with the way Benavidez came across, he too would be ignored.
