The woman defended that she got engaged only a few days after her brother’s wedding.

In the post shared with the popular “Am I an **hole?” Reddit forum, a recently engaged woman explained that her brother had a wedding ceremony in a “very small destination” with less than 15 people. After that occasion, the woman went on a special trip with her partner, where they popped the question.

“My now-fiancé and I extended our trip after everyone went home and spent a few days exploring the Grand Canyon, a few hours north of the wedding, where he proposed,” she added.

However, she explained that when she told her brother, and now her sister-in-law, about the engagement, they accused her of “competing” with them. The woman then apologized to the couple individually.

“I understood that [my brother] stood up for my SIL and that she felt hurt (although I really don’t understand why). I also sent her a separate apology and explained that it was not our intention to offend and that I just wanted to share the news with the family and that I believe there is room for happiness for everyone,” she wrote.

According to a Reddit user, her sister-in-law didn’t respond to her text. However, her brother answered and he was still displeased.

“My brother doubled down and said that the time and location were bad and we shouldn’t have planned the wedding,” she concluded.

The post quickly went viral, with more than 10,000 upvotes. In the comments, several people came to the defense of the newly married couple, saying that they are not distracting from someone’s wedding day.

“While it would be wrong to do it at his wedding/reception, your brother does NOT own the month or even the week AFTER the wedding! Your timing was good,” wrote one.

“Your brother needs to calm down. The bride gets a day, her one wedding day. She doesn’t get a location, a week, or anything else. She gets her wedding. That’s all. You didn’t fall in,” added another.

Others agreed that the woman and her fiance got engaged at the right time, and criticized her brother for his behavior.

“You didn’t do that at the wedding or any of the festivities after the ceremony. You extended your journey and it happened after everyone left. Your SIL and brother had their day. Life doesn’t stop for everyone else after their ONE DAY! That’s the craziest reason to be mad at someone,” one person commented.

“I see you’re trying valiantly to understand, but I’m not sure your brother or his wife will be able to give you a good reason for their reaction. Because their reaction is WILD!” added another. “The fact that you and your fiance got engaged a few days after the wedding before you flew home… is another matter entirely. Also, the level of hostility in that message from your brother is nasty and definitely not normal. I’m so sorry he’s treating you like that.”
