Three people and a dog were rescued Saturday after falling through ice on the Concord River in Bedford.
About 2:40 p.m., police were called to the river boat ramp on Carlisle Road after a woman and her dog fell through the ice, according to Bedford Chief John Fisher.
Police say a dog walking on the ice fell into the water and the owner tried to rescue the dog before she too fell through the ice.
A second person tried to rescue them but also fell through the ice.
A good Samaritan who saw the incident entered the icy water to try to save them.
Bedford police arrived within minutes of receiving the call and launched emergency ice and water rescue discs and ropes from shore to rescue the three people and the dog.
The woman was taken to a local hospital for exposure to the cold. The two other people who went into the water and the dog were not hospitalized, police said.
“[Responding officers] did an amazing job and were able to get everyone out of the water before anyone was seriously injured,” Chief Fisher said in a statement.
“I also want to urge residents to stay off the ice. While no natural ice is ever 100 percent safe, Bedford’s frozen waterways are absolutely not safe for any human activity at this time,” he added .
