Northampton lowers rates for public EV charging

NORTHAMPTON – The city’s electric vehicle charging network will reduce the cost to vehicle owners by 7% starting Jan. 1.

Since October, when the city began evaluating rates for the service, the price has been set at $1.92 an hour, the city said in a news release. But that was based on the old rates the city paid for electricity.

The change from charging by time to charging by amount of electricity (32 cents per kilowatt hour) will reduce the cost for almost all users and will be fairer for owners of some older electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids that can charge at a lower speed than others, the city said.
