JK Rowling admitted her “cancellation” after sharing a post celebrating their wedding anniversary.
The Harry Potter the author has faced a strong backlash in recent years through her open attitude about trans women, which many, including LGBT+ spokespeople, consider transphobic.
Rowling’s comments about the trans community also prompted the stars of the Potter film franchise, including Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watsonto distance themselves from the author and her work.
Rowling on Tuesday (December 26) addressed the backlash her statement sparked after she shared a photo alongside her husband, Scottish doctor Neil Murray.
In a subsequent post, the author implied that Murray made what many would consider an unacceptable remark about the trans community. When one person called her to find out what it was all about, she said, “I’m not going to cancel my husband. One in the family is enough!”
Rowling first publicly stated her stance on transgender women in December 2019 when she tweeted in support of the researcher. These initial remarks sparked backlash from the author’s fans, who branded Rowling a “terf” – an acronym for a trans-exclusionary radical feminist.
The author, who has denied being transphobic but has previously stated that she would rather go to jail than refer to a trans person by their preferred pronouns, went on to post a much-vaunted essay on gender identity ideology on her website.
In this essay, she listed five reasons to be “concerned about the new trans activism” and received condemnation from Radcliffe and Watson.
Radcliffe, who played the lead role of Potter in the adaptation of Rowling’s novels, previously wrote an essay for The Trevor Project as a way to show support for the trans communityand apologized “for the pain” Rowling’s comments sparked the Potter fandom.
