Dozens of people have been killed in a prison riot Mozambique on Christmas Day, the authorities said.

The luxury, as they say, has left a maximum security prison in the capital Maputo, 33 people dead and 15 injured, according to police chief General Bernardino Rafael.

About 1,534 people escaped from prison in the incident but 150 of them have already been recaptured, he added.

Mozambique is experiencing escalating civil unrest linked to the disputed Octwhich extended to the residence of the Frelimo party for a long time. The opposition groups and their supporters claim that the vote was rigged.

While Rafael criticized the cries outside the prison for inciting a riot, Justice Minister Helen Kida said local Miramar TV privately reported that the riots started inside the prison and had nothing to do with the protests outside.

“The clashes later resulted in 33 deaths and 15 injuries in the vicinity of the prison.” Rafael said at a media briefing.

The identities of those killed and injured were concealed.

Mozambique’s interior minister said on Tuesday that at least 21 people had been killed in the unrest after the country’s court confirmed on Monday. Frelimo’s victory.
