A crack in a Colorado More than 170 stranded skiers and snowboarders were forced to lift their skis on Saturday, when men lowered gondola ropes for hours.
Officials are still investigating what caused a gondola lift at Winter Park Resort, about 70 miles (113km) west of Denver, to crash. The lift automatically stopped when a lift detected a crack in a piece of the structure just after noon on Saturday, spokeswoman Jen Miller said.
“The ski circuit has practiced this extensively,” Miller said he saidaccording to the times of the Sun. “It is very rare that a course is completely evacuated.
No injuries were reported among the rescuers, who came at the start of a busy ski holiday season.
Ski scouts entered the cabin of each gondola from above and lowered the equipment to the ground before using a rope-equipped chair to lower each of the 174 passengers to the ground, Miller said.
Workers were replacing a lift section that cracked on Sunday as city officials and a lift worker worked with surveillance officials to find out what caused the crack, Miller said. The resort still stands before 21 others open.
