The New England Patriots‘ first season with coach Jerod Mayo it didn’t go well At 3-11 in Week 16, New England has already been eliminated from the playoffs for the third year in a row and will finish with a losing record.
There has been a lot of speculation surrounding Mayo’s job security beyond 2024. Although nothing is guaranteed, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport shed some light in the thought process to keep Mayo on the roster in 2025.
“The Krafts want to keep Jerod Mayo,” Rapoport said Sunday on “NFL GameDay.”. “They believe he’s the leader of the organization going forward and they knew it was going to be a multi-year process to get it right. That’s their stance right now. Now if things go off the rails, they really fight and he lose the locker room the last couple of games; we’ve seen that turn. As of now, the Patriots believe Jerod Mayo will be there for the future.”
There have been no public comments from owner Robert Kraft confirming his confidence in Mayo to lead the organization to its winning ways, but The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported earlier this month that the Krafts have secured privately that Mayo will return next season.
The players have supported their coach and showed faith in him.
“It’s his first year, his first year as a coach. It’s a tough challenge,” rookie quarterback Drake Maye said. “… It’s a lot of responsibility. He is finding out. As players, we’re behind him. We support it. We trust in the plan he has for us. We trust what he says in the team meeting rooms and all his little sayings he has. We believe in it and are committed to it. The results are coming. They are coming. Everyone would like to be now and we’re fighting for it, but sometimes it doesn’t work that way. But I think it will come and victory will come in the near future.”
The Patriots have three games remaining, including two against the AFC East champion Buffalo Bills. And after an embarrassing loss to the Arizona Cardinals last week after a bye, it will be interesting to see how New England responds in Week 16.
The Bills are already in the playoffs while the Patriots are just trying to survive the rest of the season, but they can end the season on a high note playing competitive football.
