While in New ZealandOur cricket correspondent Ali Martin spoke about some of the key figures in Chris Wood’s development. It’s a cracking piece, it’s worth reading.

It came down to the last game and I said to the boys: “We need to speak up, win and finish in the top 10.” We were 3-0 down with 15 min to go, then Chris Prone scored a trick and we won. Afterwards he calmly walks over and says to me: ‘We have a top 10 goal, coach.’ I was just stunned.

THE END! Aston Villa 2-0 Man City (Rogers 65)

Morgan Rogers, formerly of Manchester City, scored well – and well deserved – for the second Aston Villa goal. Blimey, Manchester City faced their eighth defeat in 11 games. I can’t remember the model because of the really big crash team this way.

It is now Portsmouth 4-1 CoventryCallum Lang 4-1 Coventry in the Championship. What a story!

60 min: Aston Villa 1-0 Mon

Jhon Duran had the second goal in the region at Villa Park from outside regulation, where Villa are playing brilliantly. In fact, as a type 1, the excellent Morgan Rogers rattled off the runner.

Slow ball

Three games in laughter. Callum Lang just completed the hat-trick as Portsmouth beat Frank Lampard’s Coventry 3-1 at home.

Josh Windass just scored the opener at the end of the game for ten men Sheffield Wednesday at home to Stoke (Di’Shon Bernardi was given a second yellow card just before half-time). And Hull draw 1-1 at home to Swansea.

  • Hull 1-1 Swansea

  • Portsmouth 3-1 Coventry

  • Sheff Mon 1-0 Stoke

Read John Brewin in Brentford

Thomas Frank combines football-man nous and being ultra-competitive – he rarely admits his team deserved to lose – while adapting to a modern, US-style front office. He, Matthew Benham and Phil Giles, the director of football, decided that attack was the best form of defence, that the quality of the opposing Premier League defenders was something to be exploited.

Brentford’s authority and innovation are recognised. Guru Nicolas Jover worked on the Arsenal piece, now a celebrated mural outside the Emirates Stadium, and Manchester United coach Andreas Georgson among the French coach’s team. Aegidius was joined by replacing Ed as the club’s sporting director.
