Patriots defender talks up Josh Allen as MVP, and Drake Maye comparisons

FOXBOROUGH – The patriots they’ll have their hands full trying to slow Josh Allen and the Bills’ explosive offense during Sunday’s Week 16 game.

Jerod Mayo’s defense hasn’t fared as well against the mobile quarterbacks they’ve faced thus far, Arizona’s Kyler Murray being the latest.

In Davon Godchaux’s mind, however, Allen is turning out the lights. So much so, Godchaux puts him above every QB, including Patrick Mahomes.

“I think he’s probably the best quarterback in the NFL right now,” Godchaux said Wednesday. “Definitely MVP. Lamar (Jackson) is playing really well as well, but Josh, I think he’s going to win MVP for sure.

“He’s earned our respect the way he plays against us every year. You think he’s out of bounds, then he makes an incredible throw into the end zone, incredible throws. Just wear this outfit.”

Through 14 games, Allen has thrown 25 touchdown passes, with just five interceptions for the 11-3 Bills. He has thrown for 3,395 yards and has a 104.5 quarterback rating.

“Look they lost Stephon Diggs, they lost Gabe Davis and Josh is still carrying the team and having an even better year than he had with those guys,” Godchaux continued. “He definitely has my vote for MVP.”

Earlier this year, Godchaux was referred Patriots quarterback Drake Maye like Josh Allen 2.0.

“Josh is an older guy, but Drake definitely has some of those tangibles,” Godchaux said. “Nowadays, if you’re a quarterback in the NFL, you’ve got to be able to fight. . . . Drake definitely has a lot of fighting ability. Josh has a lot of fighting ability. Josh is a bigger guy, but you can definitely see some similarities.”

The game tipped at 4:25, a more marked time, and Godchaux said the Patriots would be ready for the challenge.

“You don’t need a pregame speech to be hyped for this game,” he said. “This is going to be a great atmosphere, the fans are going to be crazy… I love it.”
