An email from Tim Thomas: “Given the increasing unpredictability of weather patterns, Test cricket has taken the page off the surface of the world and extended the window to play. Playing for 5 days, 7 or 10 with the option of some being called off due to rain or heat, seems like a nice way to get results. Broadcasters and sponsors are never going to go for it but given how the rest of the week in Brisbane looks, I think that’s for the best.
The point, Tim, is that administrators tend to want to squeeze out tests for up to four days. Predictably, the schedule is easier. Extended periods never work, because the costs of having staff and stadiums on standby and the cost increase every day, while the revenue released for a test match is a one-off fee in the competition, no matter how long it yields. Every day, therefore, is spent more and more to avoid an increase in receipts, except from receipts from gates which would be despised in six or more days.
Today’s schedule is already so packed that it hardly features in the two most frequent Test series of the season, much less a series where the matches were unpredictable in a week or more. Yes, that idea (to bring the witness back to the discussion) would be impossible. The WTC has one last day of support if needed, and we’ll give it until then.
“What are you doing in the third innings?” 1 Samuel Purdue asks by email. “Watch Bumrah and wise up the other bowler and see where you go or narrow the day? Do you play with the risk of losing?”
I think if Australia had four bowlers they would be much more likely to do this. Mariscos is clearly not quite fit, despite the protests that have been used over the two rounds since Hazlewood is missing. I don’t think he wants to bowl much more than 50 overs given the workload for Starc and Cummins before Melbourne. But then, Test opiumachus is tough and you never know when you will be in a position to win. I think it’s worth it today, because at least the fifth day with rain around the pitch is a chance to get a few wickets early in all but one of the Indian innings this series.
Of course, all that was said, now we’ve lost it again because of the weather. So maybe there is no point, and they also keep their bowls and use the batting net on the day.
Let me tell you who the story of today is about, let it be done once. Usman Khawaja. Nathan McSweeney. Marnus Labuschagne. Everyone needs to go into this series, despite Labuschagne’s fifty in Adelaide. You are in hiding for nothing, in fact, if you bat against Bumrah on a dark, wet day with little profit, but they have to deal with it, so they have the ability to put together a good innings without much riding on it. Ingenious hit.

Cummins is quick to spare, turns to the frightened man, and immediately surrenders his head. Not from a long-range slap shot that yields two, but a defensive shot that draws Akash Deep’s foot back out of the gap, where the boot lingers trying to get back on the line. Others dye from the head that was created. Good bowling, but a quality innings from deep.

77th over: India 257-9 (Bumrah 10, Deep 27); So there are 98 bookings for the day, and one ball from Cummins (which counts as part of yesterday). Two-way innings change, if it doesn’t happen at lunch or tea, so two potential innings changes from here means four overs. Take the total up to 94 overs. Every face in India here is less ready to face Australia, or less than India can face later.
Cummins bowls snorter moving seam. Bumrah fumbles into them, after a deep round, he is pointed at the point.
76th over: India 256-9 (Bumrah 10, Deep 27); Nathan Lyon to start for the day rather than Mitchell Starc. I want to set fire to York. Bumrah looks to sweep as he misses the bat, but takes the arm, and finally slips leg to leg on four. Flees, to be, flees.
75th over: India 252-9 (Bumrah 10, Deep 27); Of course, Cummins only gets one ball because yesterday they left in bad light with their five balls over the balls. Abyss runs on a rope through the ground.
Here come Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Gurgite with a slightly tougher chance of doing it in Australia’s favour. and Pat Cummins with a chance to five.

Hello world. A fun fourth day despite the rain, India kept going in dramatic and sometimes funny situations. Who doesn’t love the ultimate partnership against the odds? That partnership has continued as Australia have yet to claim a fifth wicket this morning, at which point they have three chances. one big, two removed.
Australia to bat again regardless (or declare without batting). So they will probably have a net and then a little speculative bowl against India late in the day, given to three bowlers.
Either Australia could break a hundred or run as fast as possible and set a target of over 300 and beyond India and try to make them out of the bowl.
Or Australia could fall into the pile, thus setting India’s target below 300, and India could have the arrows to chase it down.
Probably more than that, because it rains many times, and we get wet.
