Birthday boy David Benavidez shoved ‘regular’ WBA champion David Morrell during their bout today, resulting in a near brawl during their media training session to promote their February 1st headliner.
When the two champions met, words were exchanged, and Benavides pushed Cuban Morel (11-0, 9 KOs) across the room without warning. Morel responded by throwing his VBA belt at Benavidez, narrowly missing him with a head kick. The two teams immediately teamed up to prevent any fisticuffs.
It looked like Benavidez was getting ready for the fight, perhaps angered by Morrell’s stupid speech, as he let the Mexican Monster have it during the showdown. It’s likely that Morrell reminded Benavidez that he had been avoiding him for two years and wanted no part in the fight against him.
Morel poses a major threat to Benavides’ future dreams of fighting the winner of the Arur Beterbiev vs Dmitri Bivol 2 rematch on February 22nd. There is a lot of money for Benavidez or Morel to fight for the winner of that contest. So it’s understandable why Benavidez is so wounded. He literally cannot afford to lose this fight against Cuban Morel.

“Everything is 100%, and I’m going to go in there and win by knockout. Today was my birthday, so I didn’t want to be too aggressive. I tried to shake his head, but he kept running his mouth. I’m not going to let anyone disrespect me like that,” Benavidez continued of Morrell.
“I don’t know who this guy thinks he is.” He thinks he’s the toughest guy on the planet. I’m gonna beat the fucking hell out of him. There is nothing more to say. He’s a great fighter, yes, but I’m going to make all these great fighters look average.”
