Authorities in Madison, Wisconsin, are reporting at least five dead and multiple injuries at a private K-12 school.
The shooting happened at Abundant Life Christian School around 11 a.m. Monday. The shooter, believed to be a student at the school, is among the dead, according to Madison police. Police said the school has been cleared and there is no further threat.
A nearby middle school, high school and elementary school were locked down amid the shooting at Abundant Life.
Madison Police Chief Sean Barnes called it a “sad, sad day.”
At an afternoon press conference, Barnes said officers responded just before 11 a.m. to reports of an active shooter at Abundant Life. The last time the department trained for an active shooter scenario was just two weeks ago, according to Barnes. He said the killer was a “juvenile”, who is believed to have died by suicide. Seven others were wounded and taken to area hospitals, Barnes said.

“I’m asking everyone to once again send their sincere wishes, prayers and thoughts to the community – but this time it’s my community,” he told reporters.
Located on Madison’s east side and with approximately 400 students, Abundant Life was founded in 1978 “as a Christian community school with a vision of providing academic excellence in a Christ-centered environment for families in the greater Dane County area,” the website tells visitors schools. “Our reliance on the Bible as the inspired Word of God and the foundation for all we teach is an integral part of who we are.”
