Boxing results: Jaime Munguia stops Bruno Surace!


Former WBO welterweight champion Jaime Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) was upset and stopped by EBU silver middleweight champion Bruno Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) at 2:36 of the sixth round in a scheduled 10 round fight on Saturday night in Tijuana, Mexico.

In the first round, Munguia had a slight advantage with both punches after the bell, so referee Juan Jose Ramirez had to step in and stop it.

In the second round, after one minute, Munguia landed a hockey left to the chin and Surace went down for the first time in his career, with an 8 count from referee Ramirez. He managed to reach the bell. In the third round, Munguia had Surace on the defensive for the entire round, mostly against the ropes, and was lucky to survive until the bell.

In the fourth round, it was all Munguia. With half a minute remaining, Surace landed his best shot of the fight with a right uppercut to the chin that rocked Munguia. In the sixth round, Munguia had Surace against the ropes several times, but he couldn’t string together enough punches to finish Surace.

In the sixth round, Munguia landed a pair of lefts to the chin and Surace was against the ropes. Surace countered with a right to the chin and Munguia landed on his back, barely beating the count to nine, but referee Ramirez had seen enough and wisely ordered a stoppage. It took more than ten minutes for announcer Jimmy Lennon, Jr. to announce the time of the break in more than ten minutes.

Junior middleweight Jorge ‘Chino’ Garcia, 32-4 (26), defeated Kudratillo ‘The Punisher’ Abdukakhorov, #1581⁄4, of Andijan, UZB, 20-4 (12), over 10 rounds.

In the first three rounds, Abdukahorov outplayed Garcia. In the fifth round, Garcia was landing uppercuts supporting Abdukahorov.

In the sixth round, Abdukahorov continued to switch to the southpaw and return to Orthodoxy.

Garcia finished the stronger of the two in the ninth round. In the tenth and final round, Garcia injured Abdukahorov in the final seconds.

Scores 97-92, 99-90 twice.

In the co-main event, super-bantamweight Alan Picasso, 31-0-1 (17), knocked out southpaw Jehison Kuehl, 13-3-1 (11) at 1:55 of the third round of the scheduled ten rounds.

In the first two rounds, it was all Picasso. In the third round, a left hook to the body dropped Cuelho for a full count from referee Juan Jose Ramirez.

Super bantamweight Sebastian ‘Logan’ Hernandez Reyes, 18-0 (17), stopped Sergio ‘El Canala’ Sosa, 14-5-3 (3) at 2:59 of the seventh round of the scheduled ten rounds.

For the first three rounds, Sosa worked on Hernandez’s body. In the fourth round, Sosa had Hernandez against the ropes for most of the round. In the fifth round, Hernandez came back holding on.

In the seventh round, Hernandez left Sosa defenseless with a barrage of punches, prompting referee Edgar Lopez to stop the fight.

Feather WBC Youth Continental Champion Cristian ‘El Pelon’ Islas, 11-3-1 (7), lost to southpaw Juan Anacona, 13-1 (6), in eight rounds.

Anacona had the advantage in the first three rounds. In the fifth round, Islas had his best round, although he had a bloody nose.

In the final seconds of the sixth round, the action was stopped when Islas complained of a right eye from Anacona’s left. In the seventh round, Islas was bleeding from the nose and the right eye was partially closed. In the eighth and final round, Anacona had Islas on defense, which was receiving support.
