At least five killed in shootings around French migrant camp | France

At least five people have been killed in shootings in and around a migrant camp near the northern French city of Dunkirk.

A 22-year-old man claiming to be the gunman surrendered at a police station near Ghyvelde at 5pm local time on Saturday.

The aforementioned author told police that he killed a man, believed to be 29 years old, in the French town of Wormhout and later took the lives of four others at the Loon-Plag refugee camp.

The four victims at the camp are understood to be two security agents and two people living there, Reuters reported.

Authorities reported three more weapons in the suspect’s car, French media reported.

It was not immediately clear what caused the shootings at Wormhout and Loon-Plag, located about six miles from the Channel.

According to the charity Care4Calais, refugee camps in the countryside have for years been dominated by “Kurdish or Afghan families and many families with small children.”
