Thai police said on saturday that two suspects were in custody as authorities investigated a bomb attack in the north that killed at least three people and injured dozens of others.
The explosive device was thrown into the crowd during an outdoor performance at the annual festival in the town of Umphang in Tak province, which borders Myanmarjust before midnight on Friday, according to the Umphang Association of Rescue Groups.
Local police said that at least 48 people were injured and that the police have not yet filed charges against the suspects as the investigation is ongoing.
Thanathip Sawangsang, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, told The Associated Press that local police said there had been a fight between rival groups of men before the blast and there was no wider security threat. He said forensic evidence showed the explosive device was a homemade bomb.
Tak province has a strong military presence in its border areas, including Umphang.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed her condolences to the victims and their families, and ordered security personnel and relevant agencies in the area to investigate and help those affected, government spokesman Jirayu Houngsap said.
