VBC Orders Mbilli vs. Munguia for the interim super middleweight title

The World Boxing Council has ordered No. 1 Christian Mbili vs. Jaime Mungia to fight for the WBC’s interim super middleweight title to decide whether champion Canelo Alvarez’s belt is mandatory in the organization.

VBC orders Munguia-Mbilli

It would be up to Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) to decide if he would like to defend against the winner of Mungui vs. Mbilli.

The Mexican superstar already defeated Mungia (44-1, 35 KOs) via a 12-round unanimous decision on May 4 of this year, appearing to wear him down in the second half, opting to spare him. The scores were 117-110, 116-111 and 115-112.

Mbili (28-0, 23 KOs) would pose a problem for Munguia, 28, as he is an aggressive fighter with excellent power and high work rate. While both fighters showed vulnerability, 2016 Olympian Mbili may have too many weapons for Jaime.

Mbili’s recent wins:

– Sergej Derevyanchko: UD 10
– Mark Heffron: KO 1
– Rohan Murdock: RTD 6
– Demond Nicholson: KO 4

Top Rank and Zander-promoted Munguia fights this Saturday, December 14th, in a 10-round confidence booster against little-known second divisioner Bruno Surance (25-0-2, 4 KOs) in Tijuana, Mexico. This fight went under the radar of fans due to Surace being a complete unknown and Munguia’s poor showing against Canelo last May.

The criticism Munguia has received is that his promoters have strategically matched him for most of his career. He maneuvered around risky fights to build his 44-1 record without fighting anyone of any quality. When Munguia finally faced a good opponent, Canelo, he was no match.
