SPRINGFIELD – An attempt to end the often uncomfortable and controversial practice of requiring city councilors to adopt pay raises for themselves and other elected officials failed in a closed vote Monday night.
The proposal called for ending the long-standing practice of the City Council proposing and adopting increases for the mayor, the School Committee and themselves, and instead creating an annual system for awarding annual increases in the cost of life
“What he’s trying to do is put an end to the discussion by putting a cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, that will be attached … to the Springfield City Retirement Board,” said City Councilman Victor Davila
