2010 book Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It became an Amazon bestseller in the week since UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was killed.

The book’s title recalls the three words carved into shell casings — “deny,” “defend,” “reject” — found on the Midtown Manhattan street where Thompson, 50, was fatally shot on Dec. 4. Luigi Mangione, 26, has been charged with murder in connection with Thomson’s death.

Investigators believed the cryptic words found on the cartridges alluded to the “three Ds of insurance” — deny, delay, defend — tactics critics say insurers use to avoid paying claims.

Luigi Mangione allegedly hatched his plot to “hack” UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson at his “parasite bean convention,” the shooting suspect allegedly wrote in a passage of his notebook.

A spiral notebook was found along with a 262-word manifesto, a ghost gun, a silencer and fake IDs in the shooting suspect’s possession at the time of his arrest at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Monday, according to CNN.

Inside the notebook was a to-do list that listed the tasks that needed to be completed in order to carry out the murder, as well as notes that justified those plans, a law enforcement source told the network.

Now, two law enforcement agencies have cited a passage from Mangione’s bookThe New York Times.

“What are you doing? You’re screwing the CEO at the annual convention against parasitic beans. It is targeted, precise and does not put innocents at risk,” one of the passages was written in the notebook, officials said.

A man arrested in Pennsylvania on Monday now faces a murder charge in New York in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Authorities in Pennsylvania took Luigi Mangione, 26, into custody in Altoona, police sources told CBS. He is now being held without bond in Pennsylvania as he faces charges in two states.

Luigi Mangione’s fingerprints match fingerprints collected at the scene of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s murder, law enforcement sources said CNN Wednesday.

The development comes two days after a 26-year-old man was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a McDonald’s employee recognized him in photos distributed by the NYPD.

Mangione appeared at an extradition hearing on Tuesday, contesting being transferred to New York, where he faces charges of second-degree murder. The judge denied him bail.

“It’s completely out of touch and an insult to the intelligence of the American people and their lived experience!” Mangione shouted as he was escorted into the Blair County courthouse.

Luigi Mangione’s attorney says he has seen no evidence linking the gun found in his client’s possession during his arrest Monday to the one used by Brian Thompson’s killer in Manhattan last week.

“I am not aware of any evidence linking the gun found on him to the crime. These are the things we want to see,” Thomas Dickey told Good Morning America host George Stephanoplous on Wednesday morning.

When Stephanoplous stated that the gun “looked exactly the same as the one used” by the gunman who killed Thompson, Dickey replied, “A lot of guns look the same.”

The attorney said he hopes to “get hold” of other evidence, including the so-called 262-word manifesto allegedly written by Mangione, as early as Wednesday.

“Today is another day. We look forward to beginning our investigation into what evidence may or may not be there.”

Luigi Mangione will fight extradition to New York and is expected to plead not guilty to the murder charges pending against him there, his attorney Tom Dickey said.

The suspect in the Brian Thompson shooting appeared for an extradition hearing Tuesday at the Blair County Courthouse in Hollidayburg, Pennsylvania.

After the hearing, a lawyer said the 26-year-old would fight to be moved to New York to face murder charges.

“He is pleading not guilty to those crimes,” Dickey told reporters Tuesday. “I haven’t seen any evidence that he’s the killer.”

Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks said the governors of Pennsylvania and New York remain confident they can get an order to transfer him to the Empire State before the 30-day deadline.

Dickey also said he hopes his client pleads not guilty to the charges he faces in Pennsylvania – felonies including forgery, false identification and carrying a weapon without a license.

Luigi Mangione has been charged with murder in connection with the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside his Manhattan hotel early last Wednesday.

He is currently being held in a Pennsylvania jail without bond pending extradition to New York to face murder charges. He also faces charges of violating Pennsylvania’s gun laws. On Tuesday, his lawyer said he is expected to plead not guilty to all charges.
