New York prosecutors filed a murder charge against 26-year-old suspect hours after he was charged with gun crimes in the Pennsylvania on Monday, according to court records. He is being held without bond in a Pennsylvania jail.
NYPD said Detective Chief Joseph Kenny Mangione will be extradited to New York to face a homicide charge in connection with the latest shooting of a health care provider Wednesday morning in midtown Manhattan.
Mangione was arrested after he was spotted by a patron at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, who alerted police after recognizing him from the pictures which were distributed by the NYPD last week.
He allegedly possessed a ghost gunsuppressor, “multiple false identification documents” and handwritten manifesto that allegedly disrupted the health care system, authorities said.
Mangione cousins broke their silence and said they were “shocked and devastated” by the arrest, sending their “prayers to the family Brian Thompson“, they said in a statement shared on X by Mangione’s cousin Nino.

McDonald’s was ‘bombed’ after Mangione’s arrest at a Pennsylvania store
Google reviewed a number of negative reviews from McDonald’s after Luigi Mangione was arrested at a branch in Altoona, Pennsylvania and later charged with the murder of Brian Thompson in New York on Monday.
The killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO has sparked a wave of frustration with America’s health care system.
After a spate of disparaging reviews unrelated to the business, a tactic known as “review bombing,” Google reportedly got involved.
“This location has rats in the kitchen that will make you sick and your insurance won’t cover it,” says one review, per Reuters.
A Google spokesperson told the news agency, “These reviews violate our policies and have been removed.”

What is spondylolisthesis? Spinal conditioning that may have plagued Mangione
Brian Thompson’s alleged killer reportedly suffered from chronic back pain — and apparently wrote a handwritten note stating he suffered from spondylolisthesis, CNN reports.
But what is spondylolisthesis?
The condition is when a vertebra, one of the bones in your spine, slips or moves forward onto the vertebra below. It often occurs in the lower back.
Doctors can diagnose spondylolisthesis as low or high, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
“High-grade slippage occurs when more than 50% of the width of a broken vertebra slides forward onto the spine below it,” the website says.
Those with a high degree of slippage are more likely to experience “significant pain” and “nerve injury” and need surgery to relieve symptoms, according to the AAOS.

ICYMI: Josh Shapiro slams those who celebrated the UnitedHealthcare firing
At a news conference Monday night in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Shapiro addressed the “disturbing” number of Americans who “looked to celebrate rather than condemn this killer.”
Authorities named the 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, who was arrested earlier that day in Pennsylvania“person of strong interest” in the murder, although he has not yet been charged with the crime. He was charged with weapons crimes after his arrest in Pennsylvania, although officials say they expect charges to be filed in New York in connection with the fatal shooting at the executive branch.
“Brian Thompson was a father of two children. He was a husband. And he was a friend to many. And yes, he was the CEO of a health insurance company,” Shapiro told reporters.

Mangione was ‘reported missing’ by his mother a few weeks before the executive shooting
Luigi Mangione was reported missing by his mother weeks before UnitedHealthcare CEO Broan Thompson was killed in Manhattan.
The 26-year-old suspect, now facing murder charges in New York in connection with the death of a health insurer last Wednesday, was reportedly reported missing by his mother on Nov. 18, possibly in San Francisco, law enforcement sources told New York Post.
Mangione was born and raised in Maryland and has ties to San Francisco and a last known address in Honolulu, police said.
One of the suspect’s former colleagues, Aaron Cranston, said The Post that he had not been in contact with his relatives since a few months ago during back surgery.
Another friend said The New York Times that he was plagued with back pain and that his “lower vertebrae were half an inch” while staying in a shared apartment in Honolulu.
An acquaintance said he underwent another spinal operation last year.

Mangione had been living with “debilitating back pain” and underwent surgery last year, according to a friend
Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing Brian Thompson in New York City, has reportedly been living with debilitating back pain for which he is said to have undergone surgery last year, a friend said.
His back pain was a chronic and ongoing problem for the defendant, said RJ Martin, a friend of Mangione’s and a spokesman for Surfbreak, a shared housing complex in Honolulu, where Mangione lived for about six months. The New York Times.
Martin told the newspaper that Mangione moved to Hawaii in hopes of getting as healthy as possible before major back surgery.
The injury has kept Mangione from surfing and hampered his romantic life, the spokesman said.
“His spine was kind of misaligned,” Martin said The Times. “He said his lower vertebrae were almost half an inch, and I think he pinched a nerve. Sometimes he would do well and other times not.”
Martin said Mangione ended up having back surgery in 2023.
Mangione sent him a photo of his X-ray, which “looked disgusting, with just huge screws going into his spine,” Martin told CNN.
