Terence Crawford is stubbornly secretive about the tactics he will employ in his potential fight against three-belt unified super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez in 2025.
Entertainment, not boxing
It’s Crawford thirsty for the Canelo fight, discussing the money and how it will cement his legacy. Obviously, that would fit the classification as “fun” but NOT as boxing because Crawford is too small and not powerful enough to move up two divisions from 154 to 168 to challenge Canelo.
In Crawford’s recent junior middleweight debut against WBA champion Israil Madrimov on August 3rd, we saw that his power has not improved over the 147 division. If Crawford can’t even punch at 154, how will he fare at 168 against Canelo? Again, arguing between them is “fun”, a “show” but not boxing.
In the real world, you move up in weight, fight killers in the weight class, and EARN the title. You are not given credit for what you have done against lower fighters in other weight classes. Crawford should go to 168 and beat these five:
- Osley Iglesias
- David Benavidez
- David Morrell
- Christian Mbilli
- Caleb Plant
Crawford’s chances of getting through these five sharks to Kanelo are non-existent. That doesn’t happen. He will be captured by the first predator he has faced, Iglesias, and will be forced to return from where he came in 154.
His Excellency Turki Alalshik says he will try to make a fight next year between superstar Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) and junior middleweight champion Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs).
Will cost a fortune to make that bout, as Canelo, 34, resisted the idea of facing Crawford, seeing it as a bleak no-win situation. If Canelo wipes out Crawford, he will be left behind because he picked an old, small and frail 37-year-old fighter who has never fought at 168 or 160.
“I don’t want to go in there and say I’m going to box him. When I get in the ring, I might stay in front of him. “I don’t want to say I’m going to stay in front of him when I might have to box him,” Terence Crawford said on Carl Froch’s YouTube channel, declining to reveal his game plan for the 2025 fight against Canelo Alvarez.
“I’m the type of fighter who adapts on the fly.” “Throughout my career, I do what’s necessary to get the job done,” Crawford said. “That’s why we’re in the game, to leave a legacy.”
The Mayweather Blueprint
From what Crawford says, he will look to follow Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s plan. boxing and moving all night against Canelo to make him boring. In the end, it won’t be “fun” for the fans. It will be a rip-off, and people will be furious that they spent money on this circus-level event.
There is absolutely NO way in the world that Crawford is going to stop and fight Canelo because his chances of success are minimal. He was a counter-puncher and mover throughout his career. He’s not going to stray from that approach against Canelo and fly into the stratosphere.
