Jaime Munguia says he is interested in fighting Edgar Berlanga in 2025 and thinks it would be a “good fight”. This would be a business level match as this is not the most modern type of match as neither of these guys are going anywhere in the division.
Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) has been vocal about his interest in facing Mungia (44-1, 35 KOs) next since his massive 12-round unanimous decision loss to Canelo Alvarez on September 14th. The scores were 118-109, 117-110 and 118-109.
Munguia-Berlanga would be a fight involving contenders who were recently beaten by Canelo, and both are looking to move quickly into a second bout. Canelo is believed to have worn Mungia out of respect and not wanting to knock out a fellow Mexican. Munguia was out of his class, and was lucky not to get knocked out by Canelo.
Mexico vs. Puerto Rico?
He doesn’t understand why Berlanga celebrated his loss afterward, and finds it ridiculous. Pathetic is the correct term. After that, Berlanga cruised around Puerto Rico in the back of a truck, treated like a hero instead of a loser. It was so utterly bizarre.
Eddie Hearn-promoted Berlanga sees it as a fight that will sell on PPV, viewing it as a Mexico vs. Puerto Rico clash. Berlanga, born in Brooklyn, New York, wants to market the fight as a match between those countries.
Munguia fights the little-known Bruno Surace (20-0-2, 4 KOs) next Saturday night in a 10-round contest on December 14th in Tijuana, Mexico.
“I don’t know what to say.” I don’t celebrate losing. I work hard so I can study. So for me, I think it’s funny to celebrate a loss,” Jaime Munguia told Fight Hub TV, talking about how Edgar Berlanga celebrated his loss to Canelo Alvarez on September 14th.
“I respect him as a fighter, but I think it’s ridiculous to celebrate defeat.” Let’s fight. It would be a good fight for next year. So let’s do it,” Munguia said of his interest in fighting Berlanga in 2025.
“That’s not the main goal (the fight against Berlanga). There’s Caleb Plant and Mbili, who’s with Top Rank. First, we have that commitment on December 14th (against Bruno Surace in Tijuana). If everything goes well, we want to have a big fight next year.
Fighting on a business level
It would be more interesting for Mungui to test himself against Mbilli, Plant or Osleis Iglesias than to fight against Berlanga. If Munguia wanted to gain the respect of the fans, he would have picked those guys over Berlanga. However, it is doubtful that they will for obvious reasons. He would lose.
Munguia is cut from the same cloth as Berlango in terms of how he’s been matched up throughout his career. So instead of breaking the mold of how he’s been groomed for 11 years, he’ll almost certainly be fighting Berlango in what would be a business-level fight.
So it’s predictable that he’ll take on Berlanga rather than risk being beaten by Mbili, Plant or Iglesias. A fight against any of the three would go against Mungui’s grain as he has never fought a good competitor in his 11-year career.

“We have to see what people want.” I think the fight with Berlang is better. I think people are going to like that fight. There are a lot of fights at 168, but we’ll see what the public wants.
“It will be a good fight, but I think Munguia will win because of the experience.” I think he has a lot more experience than Morel and he’s stronger,” Munguia said of the Feb. 1 fight between David Benavidez and David Morel. “Both are undefeated; they are with the same promoter. “It looks like a very exciting fight,” Munguia said.
David Benavidez is NOT a harder puncher than David Morrell, not even close. Munguia turned him upside down with that look. Benavidez is a big player, not a power guy, and he lacks the hype to fight like he once did when he was trying to fight smaller fighters at 168.
