The Golden Globe nomination list raises the curtain again for awards season in this new, uncertain era for cinema: post-plague, post-pandemic, but very much pre-AI. Of course, the Globes cover TV as well, and well into the coming years they’re entering a new age of relevance that many claim, rightly or wrongly, is blurring the distinction between the two. It is sure to be a new era for the honest Globes, which (hopefully) lays to rest the charges of non-diversity and kicking. Hopefully it’s even better than this year’s presenter Nikki Glaser will do It’s icily Jo Koy’s turn.
Globes is a big list for the streamer Netflix, the hip distributor A24 and of course the Cannes film festival, whose films are well represented. But the awards show always bothers someone and this year someone will be nominated for President Trump, who will no doubt be upset with the best actor (drama) nomination Sebastian Stan, who plays the young Trump in the early years in the biopic. Apprentice. He hates the trumpetthough I thought the movie was pretty easy on him. Jeremy Strong carries a best actor nomination for playing Trump’s toxic mentor Roy Cohn.
Looking eagerly at the list for apes, I find myself disappointed that there is nothing in Cillian Murphy’s terrific Irish drama. These are small thingsnothing inspired by Jane Schoenbrun I saw Glouc TVnothing for Saoirse Ronan in excellent Outrunor Marianna-Joannes Baptista in Mike Leigh’s Hard truths. But how important is the phantasmagorical crime musical-comedy of Jacob Audiard? Emily Perezthe all-singing, all-dancing show about a Mexican cartel gangster getting sex reassignment surgery, with 10 nominations. This is a film that is a big talking point among the voters of its award in Cannes – although I have to say that I found it a little fake and sometimes weird in not quite the right way. Still, audiences were struck by Audiardi’s sheer ambition, and it looks like Globe voters feel the same way.
elsewhere The brutalistBrady Corbet’s highly mysterious and provocative heroic Ayn Rand is well represented on the list, including best actor nods for Adrien Brody as a passionate Hungarian architect in postwar America, whose impulsive plutocrat character is recognized and betrayed. by Guy Pearce This was the visionary-architect film that Coppola’s Megalopolis should have been, but it wasn’t. Edward Berger is a very entertaining writer and author The roomA Vatican Council mystery adapted by Robert Harris, he’s also there, also best actor for Ralph Fiennes as the troubled cardinal who detects a whiff of sulfur in the machinations to succeed the newly deceased pope. The odds are short for Fiennes here and he wins at the Oscars, although he and Brody are up against a crowd pleaser in the form of Timothee Chalamet for his impressive impersonation of Bob Dylan in A Mother stood.
Sean Baker’s juvenile drama Anoraabout a lap dancer who marries the Russian son of Plutocrat, and Coralie Fargeat’s body satire. substance continue their amazing run of success with five nominations each, including a best actress (musical or comedy) nod for Demi Moore as a neurotic starlet trying to stay beautiful. This may be a moment of glory for Moore, but it will be in a very strong competition for Cynthia Erivo to complete them as a not-yet-criminal witch in musicals ungodly.
It’s certainly a lively Globes list and whatever happens, we can demand some passionate social media from the incoming President and his courtiers.
