An Elizabeth line worker who died after an attack at a train station in east London has been named as Jorge Ortega.
The 61-year-old suffered head injuries after the attack at Ilford station on Wednesday.
Officers from the British Transport Police (BTP) were called to the station at 8.50pm following reports of a serious attack. Ortega was taken to hospital but later died.
In a tribute released by BTP on Saturday, Ortega’s son said: “Our father was the most loving, the kindest soul you could ever have the pleasure of meeting.
“Anyone who has met our father, or who has ever worked with him, will tell you this.” He had a brilliant mind, enjoyed cooking, loved drawing, and was very skilled in art.
“He was a wonderful family man and always put other people first. He loved his grandchildren, and our father adored him in turn.
“He was totally devoted to our mum and loved beyond what words can describe.
“For the 38 years he has been together, he is an example of what it is like to be a great man and a role model that we should all look up to.
“We can never hope to be like him. He is a father and will always be in our hearts.
The RMT union said Ortega was one of its members and worked as a customer experience assistant for MTREL, which runs the Elizabeth line.
RMT general secretary, Mick Lynch, said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of our member who died after being assaulted at work.
“The entire union sends its condolences to his family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time, and the RMT’s thoughts are with them.”
Mike Bagshaw, managing director of transport operations, said: “This loss is incalculable and my heart goes out to the family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time.
“He was a great member of our team, serving the railroad community with dedication and kindness for more than two decades.”
DCI Paul Attwell, senior investigating officer, said: “We have specialist family officers supporting the victim’s family and our thoughts remain at this incredibly difficult time.
“I would like to confirm that this state is isolated and in connection with a 28-year-old man who has already been charged and remanded in custody. We are not looking for another.
Ayodele Jamgbadi, of Ilford, appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Friday on charges of grievous bodily harm, theft and possession of a prohibited weapon in a private place. He was remanded to appear at London’s inner court on January 7.
BTP detectives said they will apply for a correction of the statement to reflect the death of the victim.
Anyone with information is asked to contact BTP on 0800 405040 or text 61016 quoting incident 699 of December 4.
