A problem with the communications system used by train drivers and signalmen is causing services to run late and could cause disruption on Friday morning, the group said.

A notice on the National Railways website said: “There is a nationwide fault in the communication system used between train drivers and signalmen. As a result, services across the national rail network could be subject to disruption this morning.

“Trains across the network are having to run later due to this fault and some may also be subject to cancellations or alterations. Please check before travelling, allow extra time for your journey and follow live departure boards.”

The matter is said to be under investigation.
