Jeremy Cole was known for his “loving personality, dry wit and unwavering dedication to his family, community and profession”.
The obituary for the 49-year-old Endicott College police sergeant from Exeter, New Hampshire, paints a picture of an extraordinary void left by his sudden death.
Cole was driving home from his work shift the night before Thanksgiving when his Chevrolet Trailblazer was struck by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 95 in Newbury, according to police. The driver, Keoma Duarte, 40, of New Bedford, now charged in connection with Cole’s death.
Cole was a beloved presence at family gatherings, his obituary said, embracing his role as “big brother” within his wife’s large family.
“Always ready with a joke, witty comeback or heartfelt support,” the obituary said.
Cole took “immense pride” in the lives and achievements of his wife, Laura, and their four children.
He had served as a police sergeant at Endicott College for 15 years. In 2017, he graduated from there with an associate degree in criminal justice and was actively pursuing his bachelor’s degree at the time of his death.
“His commitment to the campus community was remarkable,” the obituary said. “Jeremy made an effort to connect with as many students as possible, handling every situation with poise, humor and compassion.”
Cole received the Lifesaving Award from the Massachusetts Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, and was “frequently sought out by students” during graduation events who expressed their appreciation for his kindness and guidance during his time at Endicott.
Cole is survived by both parents, his wife, four children and a “wide circle of family, friends and colleagues who will forever cherish his memory.”
“Jeremy’s passing leaves a deep void in the lives of all who knew and loved him,” the obituary said. His legacy of kindness, humor and dedication will live on in the hearts of all he touched. He will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.”
Cole Funeral Services will be held on Monday, December 9. The public is invited Campbell Funeral Home at 525 Cabot St. in beverly At 1:30 p.m. there will be a visit from the police, followed by a public evening from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
