State Senate vote on Boston’s request to change its property tax classification delayed for second time this week after one senator said he wanted more time to look at the city’s tax data.
Sen. Nick Collins, D-1st Suffolk, said data certified by the Treasury Department and released Wednesday night made it unclear whether the tax change would be necessary, according to the State House News Service. Mayor Michelle Wu has said the change will soften the blow of an expected big increase in property taxes in 2025, putting some of that responsibility on commercial property owners.
“City officials’ estimates have been way off the mark,” he said, according to SHNS. “We believe it is fair and prudent to take time to digest these data and talk with our constituents, stakeholders and colleagues to determine whether this rule of our own is necessary.”
