Gervonta Davis announces next fight after Roach defense

Gervonta Davis revealed he will name his next opponent in a March 1 post-fight interview following his WBA lightweight title defense against Lamont Roach at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Post fight announcement

Boxing fans already have a good idea who that will be as Gervonta (30-0, 28 KOs) revealed his three-fight 2025 roster yesterday, and the first name he mentioned was Ryan Garcia.

Tank’s fight with Ryan was created 1.2 million PPV buys on April 22, 2023, bringing in over $100 million in gross revenue. Both fighters earned cash, with the Baltimore native bringing home a purse valued in between 50 million dollars to 60 million dollars.

Targeting Ryan

Tank says he is retiring at the end of 2025, so it makes sense to fight Ryan Garcia first because it would be too risky to wait for a second or third fight next year. Ryan could be beaten by someone else. The purse that Gervonta can get against Ryan Garcia is huge.

Ryan’s purse was $30 million, which is great for a challenger. The recent success was down to Ryan’s huge popularity on social media and the hard work he put into selling the fight with interviews. The event is sold out for $84.99 on PPV, which is obviously much more than the cost of the Turki Alalshikha event.

Kingry did all the heavy lifting in promoting the fight, allowing Tank to ride on his coattails and letting him handle the marketing of the fight. With Ryan’s 12 million followers on Instagram, he often advertised his fight with Tank, many of whom are believed to have bought the event on PPV.

Ryan hurt Tank with a short left hook in the second round, but was able to capitalize on the hold which he immediately did. If not, Garcia would have won.

Tank vs. Garcia Punch Stats

– Gervonta: 93 of 235 for 39.6%
– Garcia: 59 of 257 for 23%

Davis can’t make the same money fighting the WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson because it doesn’t have a large following across the country in the US. His popularity is limited to fans who love his chatter on social media and his defensive fighting style, playing a childish game of tag. You have to really like that style to watch to be interested enough to watch Shakur go up against anyone.

The Callout

Dan Canobio: Three names you want in 2025

Gervonta Davis: “I won’t say. I never called anyone names.”

Canobbio: “So it will be your first time.” So all the more reason to tune in on March 1.”

Gervonta: “Yes, but I just told you.”
