Fraud arrest linked to justice campaign for murdered police officer Yvonne Fletcher | UK news


A man has been arrested on allegations of fraud connected to the campaign for justice over the 1984 murder of police officer Yvonne Fletcher.

PC Fletcher, 25, was shot dead during a protest outside the Libyan embassy in London, but no one has ever been charged in her death.

The Metropolitan Police received allegations of financial irregularities linked to the campaign just after his death in July, and took an investigation into Chester police to avoid any prejudice.

Chester police officers arrested the 69-year-old in Mill Hill, north London, on Wednesday, where they are also searching the property.

DC Ed Currie, of Chester Police’s financial crime unit, said: “We understand there is concern that this arrest is going to be a cause, and our colleagues from the police force are in close contact with Yvonne’s family who have been updated on developments today.

“As part of the ongoing investigation, we are keen to hear from anyone who believes they may have donated at any time to the campaign to do justice for WPc Yvonne Fletcher. This is not connected to Yvonne’s family and is not to be confused with the official Vigil Memorial Trust charity.”
