Shakur Stevenson has taken to social media to encourage Floyd Schofield ahead of their February 22 undercard fight in Riyadh. WBC lightweight champion Shakur (22-0, 10 KOs) let Schofield know not to “let go” of his dream after whipping him.
Shakur’s rejection of self-confidence
Usually this type of comment is made after a fighter wins, but an overconfident Shakur jumped the gun, consoling the 22-year-old rookie Schofield before they met.
It makes sense because Schofield will be the big underdog in this fight, and his chances of winning depend on whether he lands a lucky shot or Shakur gets hurt.
Many fans think Schofield and his father are just fighting for the million dollar payout, knowing they can’t win, they’re only in it for the money. That would be pathetic. Schofield didn’t fight anyone of note to get this title.
Schofield’s last five opponents
– René Tellez Giron
– Estuaries Serum
– Ricardo Lopez Torres
– Haskell Rhodes
– Jesus Valentine Leon
These are NOT world class fighters, and it’s incredible that Schofield was given a high ranking by the sanctioning bodies based on wins over fluffy opposition. Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya should have been adamant about not allowing Schofield to fight for the world title, but it’s understandable why he said yes.
The way Schofield looked in the fight with Girona, after being knocked out, this cash-out matchup against Shakur could be as good as it gets for him. If De La Hoya decides to continue developing Schofield, he would likely be selected by one of the second-tier fighters before he gets to the level of facing a top 15 contender.
“Don’t let your dream go after this shit.” Maybe you will one day; tell them, aunty,” Shakur Stevenson said Kscomforting Floyd Schofield before their February 22 fight in Riyadh.
Cash Out
Shakur tries to mess with Schofield in the build-up, but it doesn’t matter if he mentally drops him because he’s already out of his league in this fight. It doesn’t have to annoy him because he’s just an ordinary prospect.
“We’re going to shock the world … and NEE,” Schofield said of his fight with Shakur.
I don’t think anyone believes Schofield or his dad that they think they’re going to win. Again, they just see this as a cash-driven deal for them, looking for quick cash, take the loss, and rinse and repeat with more wins over soft opponents for another unearned title shot.
