Virgil Ortiz Jr.’s manager, Rick Mirigian, says there will be no second chance for Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis to ever get the chance to fight Virgo after deciding not to face him on the February 22 card.
There is no other chance
Mirigian told Bookingscene: “Boots won’t get a second chance,” and believes he’s fine with that. Obviously, if Ennis (33-0, 29 KOs) wanted to fight Vergil, this would be the time because the money would be huge and the visibility high.
Everyone deserves a second chance in life, but in this case there is a lack of trust. Tim Ortiz Jr. he doesn’t want to waste time on boots and end up with nothing to show if he loses his temper.
Many fans around the world will be watching Riyadh’s season ticket on February 22 as it is one of the best in years. Virgil Jr. could now face one of these two fighters on that card:
– Erislandi Lara
– Xander Zaias
If Ennis were to move up to 154 and position himself for the world title shot that Virgil Jr. (22-0, 21 KO) holds, he would probably take this fight. Ortiz Jr. won’t vacate the belt out of bitterness just because Ennis won’t be fighting him this time. That would be childish and self-defeating.
Words mean nothing
‘Boots’ Ennis’ promoter Eddie Hearn says he wants to stay at 147 to unify the division before considering a move to 154 to go after the big names. Hearn insists that Vergil Jr. will be the first guy to face when Ennis goes up in weight. Those are just words and mean nothing now after Myrigian’s statement that Ennis will not get a second chance.
The way the 27-year-old Ennis looked in his rematch against Karen Choukhadjian on Nov. 9, his career could fall apart before he makes the move to 154. He looked absolutely awful against Choukhadjian, getting hit all night and being forced to look bad in front of his hometown crowd at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
In hindsight, Hearn should have known better than to have Boots face Choukajian again after the problems he had in their first fight on January 7, 2023 in Washington, DC Ennis looked lost in that fight as Choukajian schooled him from A to B. Afterwards, Boots blamed his performance on focusing too much on trying to knock him out.
Jaron said going into the rematch, “I’m going to have fun,” and let the knockout come naturally. Man, he looked like he wasn’t having fun in the last-ditch rematch as Chuhadjian roughed him up and the Philly crowd is dead silent.
