KURMEL Moton’s fight in Atlantic City was called off tonight after the upside prospect far exceeded the agreed weight. Moton was set to fight Brian Mercado, 11-6-1 (6 KOs), just short of a lightweight in Danny Garcia’s promotion.
However, the fight was stopped when Moton hit the scale, revealing he was at least 14 pounds heavier than expected. According to Garcia’s press release, which referred to a postponement rather than a cancellation, the bout has been postponed.
The statement also praised Moton’s unwavering dedication to his craft and training regimen. The 18-year-old, often described as Floyd Mayweather’s protégé, was looking to improve on his 6-0 (5 KO) record with this proposed six-round contest.
Around this time last year, he weighed as much as 128.5 pounds. Fighting just six weeks ago in Philadelphia, Moton weighed just under 140 pounds. Clearly, from that night on, the only way was up for the rising star who tipped over 148 pounds here.
Ecuador’s opponent Brian Mercado has done most of his best work in the super-featherweight division. Mercado tends to be stopped when he steps into class. René Tellez Giron and Johan Segura knocked it out from long range. It remains to be seen whether Moton will get the same chance in the future.
“Swift Promotions would like to thank fans and partners for their understanding and patience,” the official statement said.
